While unseasoned pistachio nuts themselves are not poisonous to cats, they’re a food that cats would do well to avoid. They do offer some potential nutritional benefits, but they also pose some real risks, especially if consumed in large amounts over a long period.

Although your kitty may currently be a couch potato, cats evolved to be stealthy, lethal predators. Their bodies are made to efficiently catch, kill, and digest prey like mice, birds or lizards.

Their required nutrient profile comes from animal tissues. These necessary nutrients include taurine, arachidonic acid, vitamin A, and protein. Severe health issues will occur when a kitty lacks any of these nutrients. Of course, dry or wet cat food is made specifically to supply the proper nutrients to cats. And while some treats that fall outside the normal feline diet won’t harm your furry pal, some (like pistachios) will.

Risks of Pistachios for Cats

While most cats can eat pistachio nuts and not suffer ill effects, as a general rule cats should not be given pistachios to eat.

So if your cats decides to try a pistachio nut it encounters, for the most part it won’t require emergency veterinarian treatment. However, pistachio is not a great long-term foodstuff for cats.

Fat Content

Pistachios are high in fat. The high-fat content doesn’t benefit a cat’s diet and can even cause an upset stomach. When cats eat too much fat, they may gain weight, resulting in weight-related health issues.

High intakes of fat may also cause pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). If you see your cat lose her appetite, refuse to drink water, sleep more than usual, or vomit frequently, she may have pancreatitis. While this health issue can be treated, it may be fatal in severe cases.

Salt or Flavor Content

Salty pistachios are a tasty treat for humans, but all that salt is harmful to cats. If cats eat too much salt, it may cause salt poisoning, resulting in symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and even seizures.

Garlic and onion seasonings are common on pistachios, but they’re not good for our feline friends. In fact, onion and garlic are toxic to cats. Besides salt and flavor content, pistachios may also have some preservatives that are toxic to cats, like sodium benzoate.

Laxative Effect

Due to the high fiber content in pistachios, they may effectively act as a laxative for your cat. Excessive fiber can lead to diarrhoea in cats, which is uncomfortable for everyone! And even if your cat avoids diarrhoea, she may experience bloating and gas.

Fungus

Once a pistachio shell splits, it’s susceptible to fungal growth. Too much consumption of the fungus aflatoxin will harm your kitty. Of course, if you see any mold on your pistachios, it’s time to throw them out as they are not good for you either.

Choking Hazard

Sadly, pistachios are the ideal size to get lodged in a cat’s windpipe. If a cat manages to swallow a pistachio with the shell, the shell may turn into a blockage in her intestinal tract. Such a case would require immediate veterinary care.

Can Cats Eat Other Nuts?

Generally, it’s safest to rule out any type of nut when thinking about giving your cat a snack. Almonds, pecans, and walnuts are all high in fat, which may cause digestive issues similar to pistachios.

Macadamia nuts are toxic to pets, so be sure to stay away from them. Plus, all nuts are the right size and firmness to accidentally become lodged in a pet’s throat.

Alternatives to Pistachios

These meats are an excellent source of protein for cats. Chicken or turkey should be cooked without any seasoning or ingredients like onions or garlic, which can be toxic to cats.

Cooked Fish

Here’s another rich source of protein! Fish also has omega-3 fatty acids, which may benefit cats by keeping their skin, fur, and immune systems healthy.

Cat Treats

Of course, you can always opt for commercial or homemade cat treats. They’re specially formulated to supply a mix of nutrients that supplement a cat’s regular diet.

Catnip-Infused Treats

If you want to treat your kitty to something extra special, consider catnip! Catnip-infused treats will send your cat on an energetic whirl as her mind and body become stimulated.

Monitor your cat’s reaction to catnip closely to prevent overstimulation. In moderation, it’s a fun and enriching experience!
